Pricing:
BioMedical Science Writers bills at an hourly rate equivalent to $0.04 to $0.06 per word.
I try to maintain flexibility in my billing practices. I usually bill for my time. When I return your edited manuscript I also include a detailed invoice showing my time, hourly rate, and charges. Currently that rate is $75/hr. This generally works out to approximately $0.06 or less per word. Well-written documents may come in around $0.04 per word. References are not edited and are not counted in the word total.
Some clients (and some institutions) want an exact quote for a job before engaging my service. I am happy to oblige. At your request, I will look over your manuscript, estimate the time it will take to edit, and provide a fixed-price quote. When the job is finished, you will be billed for that amount.
Other clients may take a less formal approach. Some clients maintain an open account, intermittently sending a document or section of a document for editing. I simply track my time and periodically (approximately monthly) forward a detailed invoice.
